Any suggestions for good encounters or adventure ideas for a rogue pc who's a merchant?

Merchant, meaning they have appraise, the social skills(bluff, etc.) The most obvious would be to accompany his goods past a hazardous area. Say a desert. Add a war between nomadic tribes or some such.
A more exotic one will be the introduction of Rakshasa. Aside from being evil fell creatures they are also transplanar merchants themselves. They're prices are steep, considering lives, eternal sufferring and the sort. They are lawful and will stick to a contract faithfully(read the fine print). A botched transaction with a rakshasa can have the merchant rogue trading for his life.

I like the Rakasha angle. It actually works with something in his character's history. He had a run in with an evil mage in his past. I can say it was a shapechanged Rakasha and bring him on back. What CR is a rakasha?

I guess the obvious one is to have his shop robbed or his caravan raided.

Have him acquire an interesting item to sell, only to later find out that it is cursed, or interesting in some other fashion.

ooh speaking of cursed in the dragonlance setting there is an item called raistlin's gold where if used for transaction, if either party chetas thaen that person gets a degenerative disease until that party fulfills his end of the bargain. you could use the idea and just remove raistlin's name or find out a way to get his gold in your universe
