"You are in a tavern celebrating your recent vitory over Og the Extremely Evil. In the middle of your festivities a dishevled hobo strolls in, collapses and dies. he has a black, obviously poisoned dagger in his back. he's clutching a crumpled map in one hand and holds a glowing golden key in the other hand. What do you do?"

"I order another round."
"I want to kill the bartender, I think he might have been rude to me earlier."
"I want to try and pick up that cute bus-boy you mentioned when you described the bar."
"I continue my conversation about unicorns and how cute they are with that charming halfling I met right after I noticed my purse was missing..."

***EDITED: i suppose i was askign for it making this post. still. this is a JOKE. it didn't happen. i didn't use the hook, that's not how they responded.

If your players don't take the game seriously, get new gamers. They suck.

i was just goofing around. my players do tend to miss the obvious.

You know, I'd be tempted to be one of your players.

A poisoned dagger in the back? Sounds like a bad idea for me (as a PC) to get involved. I know nothing about whats going on, I have no personal involvement in it. If someone cares enough to send that large of a message thats flashing "Bad Idea, and we're willing to kill, in public, and use poison to stop you", I'm certainly not going to get invovled, in the middle of a tavern, with witnesses.

If I knew the hobo, maybe. or if there was no one in sight. Or if it looked like the victim wasn't supposed to be found.

this was me kidding.

I guessed it was a joke. ;)

Just thought you might like the reassurance.

And yes, I've seen players like that before. Generally when I'm the quiet player sitting in the corner saying exactly what we should be doing.

Sad, because until I read the editited part I actually felt like I wasn't alone. I had players like that for quite some time.

All I can say is that instead of letting them ruin the game I just went on and built the plot around the cute bus-boy instead of the dishelved hobo...

Of course I prefer to DM "on-the-fly" anyways it keeps me on my toes.

true. perhaps their characters weren't the type that would go for that someone was stabbed in the back right in front of them thing. our party is pretty diverse. in a manner that unless there wass some sort of malice involved we would care less. my halfling rogue would have searched and looted the body...

Well heck I would attempt to create a situation where the world would end and they didn't care if money wasn't involved...

Got boring after a while and when people started to get annoyed all I stated was "I only react to the changes you attempt to make in the world" then they stopped being so retarded...

The players come upon a small roadside temple, the doorway of which appears to be partially melted by a corrosive substance and priests are frantically trying to repair the disorder brought to the place, a priest explains that an evil gnome whom the players are chasing had just come, ransacked the place and left before anyone could stop him. He seemed to be looking for a precious artifact, but he has missed it and the priest right there has it.

"Great, which way did he go?"

This actually was a scenario my players were in. Sometimes it's so hard to keep my PCs off the tail of a higher level character whom I'm sure they can catch and equally sure will kill them when they do.

Oh my god, that sounds EXACTLY like one of our Drangonlance games!! Freakay! We are the Dragonlance group that GMs ph33r!!! ;)

Yeah... our minotaur would want the alcohol, our elf would kill the bartender, our human brothers would do "rock, paper, sissors" to see who would hit on the bartender, and well... the kinder (played by myself) would be rambling on and on about the oddest things as she "accidently aqquires" belongings of everyone around her.
