i am the dm of my game, and i have the third edition stuff, but one of my players has 3.5 and he was going to scry for the first time today and we looked it up and we had two different versions of the spell, and eventually came to find out that scry isn't even a skill in 3.5. so we ran into trouble. anyone have any suggestions?

In those terms your going to have to choose. 3.0 or 3.5. At least with the spell. Do you want it to be a skill or do you want it to be based on a will save?

In general I'd say 3.5 is superior to 3.0 in almost everyway (except the whole small long sword etc... which pretty much everyone ignores anyway...cause its dumb)

yeah, i hadn't really looked at 3.5 much because from what i saw it was exactly the same so i just thought "whatever" we'll use both handbooks. and then i saw the completely cut the skill and i was like "whoa. they can't do that". we ended up using it as a will save, but i don't think that's very realistic. i think it's better to have an advantage the more skilled you are, so i think i'm going to use it as a skill from now on.

There are a bunch of key differences. Its somewhat hard to use both. The differences are minor, but can have a huge impact.

As has already been said- pick the version you like better. And if it's all the same to you, ask the player what version he likes better (no harm in that- both versions work, and I really think DMs should try to accomodate whenever possible). Then declare that the official ruling of the campaign.

Just retroactively allow players to buy back their scry skill points if you choose the 3.5 version. Or give the player a 1-time freebie of +6 or so points of Scry skill if you insist on the 3.0 version. It won't break the campaign.

I'd go with the skill, personally. BTW: What is your icon, dude? It looks like a levitating illithid with its tentacles chopped off.

Just something I drew. I was goofing around one day. Definitely illithid-inspired!
