Yep, you done good. Sounds like the right DM with the right group.

The guy who runs our D&D game had quit DMing for several years, and the moment he knew he had found a group that he could run again was when the party genuinely mourned the kobold wizard NPC.

Unfortunately, the party's not high enough level to cast the Raise Dead themselves, and it's a "low-magic" campaign, which means that people who could cast it may not be likely to do so.

But with the exception of the LG Cleric, the party wants blood. In fact the guy playing the Drow posted in character reasoning for wanting revenge -- it's chilling. His words: "I want the killer, I want anyone who helped him, and I want whomever gave the order. When I'm done they will KNOW why they should fear Elves."
