So.. the point of my nostalgic rambling is to say that there's actually nothing at all to stop you from treating 4e as an April fools prank gone awry, if that's what you want to do. It's entirely possible to ignore it and stick with the previous rulesets if the people in your groups are agreeable. It may even be possible to have the best of both worlds, adapt 4e stuff you like, or don't .. it's the wonderful thing about rpgs in general.. they attract creative imaginative types, so we can get creative and imagintive around the rules too. :)
