Astral Questions

I haven't been able to find a good answer so far in googling around... what is you feeling about the effect of timelessness in some planes like the Astral Plane? It seems to suspend metabolism-like functions in the body, but what about spell durations and other time effects? As far as I can tell, those last their normal durations according to the rules (although on the Astral specifically, spells are quickened).

And while we're adventuring astrally, what happens when you take an extradimensional space into the astral or ethereal planes? Putting them inside each other opens various rifts to those planes, but do they have trouble being in the other planes?

In regards to your question of time, spell durations should still last to their full amount, but whether an equivalent amount of time has passed on the Material plane is another question entirely (and not really relevant to the party for combat purposes). o_o Making calls about time passing between the planes is really a DM-discretion call, but logic should win out. (As much as it ever does.)

:] Extra-dimensional spaces are perfectly fine when traveling to the Astral or Ethereal, or any other plane for that matter. The problem only arises when on EDS is placed within another. The extra-dimensional space is functioning as a demiplane, which is essentially a micro universe. Putting one tiny universe into another tiny universe causes a rift in all sorts of laws of physics and logic and causes them to either implode or explode violently.

But assuming we're allowing for the possibility of other dimensions and demiplanes in the first place, the tiny universe we just created to make a Bag of Holding is already existing on the Material Plane, so therefore it is perfectly fine to travel to other planes. :D It doesn't care where it is, as long as it isn't inside another Bag of Holding or a Portable Hole, etc.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was guessing, but it didn't really seem clearly defined, so I was just using my "DM discretion" skill and ruled pretty much what you just said. Although the characters had zero experience in the Astral plane to this point, and the NPC sending them there gave them some slightly bad advice based on rumor about such things, but they didn't have time to check it out first, so just avoided taking their haversacks and bags of holding with them, just to be safe.

Sadly, they never got hungry or poisoned there, so they never got to puzzle over any of those effects.
