D&D 3E
Mundane Magic?
25th-Sep-2006 05:04 pm
If you look at the spell lists in PHB you'll see they're full of combat magic. But life (even in D&D) doesn't consist only of battles. Yes, there are some useful spells for housekeeping but too little...

So, here's the question - Has anybody tried to invent some new mundane spells? / or seen any kind of Mundane Spellbook? %) / or how about making a new mundane usage of combat spell?

\\excuse my english - haven't practised for too long...

Check online for variant cantrips from previous editions (basically new 0-level spells). A whole bunch of those were used for mundane purposes as I recall.

It depends on what you mean by mundane.

Do you mean cantrips? If so, I can't really help much.
If you mean overall non-combat spells? Loads of them in the Spell Compendium (which come from other sources, I know, but it is nice to have them all in one place).

Generally speaking, mundane spells are level 0 cantrips, which can accomplish pretty much any and everything. For Sor/Wiz, things like Open/Close and Mage Hand have covered their bases of picking things up, opening drawers, etc.

Prestidigitation is probably simultaneously the most and least useful spell in the entire spell book. It doesn't actually DO anything, but in actuality it does EVERYTHING.

The PHB isn't the only source, so no worries. :]

My friends and I came up with a few here and there. "aura of comfortable temperature (50ft.radius)" was one of mine. My friend invented a variation on Unseen servant called "unseen fisherman."

This is also something I've sort of wondered...

Higher level spells like Wall of Iron/Permanency could be used for construction purposes... Bigby's grasping hand also... but these seem to be some good resources to check out for other 'daily-life' spells!

A PrC in Races of Destiny called Urban Soul(I think) gains spell like ability to use disintegrate, wall of stone, and stone shape so that he can more or less play SimCity.

Make your own dungeon from scratch! No experience or asthetic eye necessary! Great health plan!

I built a castle for an NPC once made out of alternating layers of Wall of Force and Prismatic Wall, with Permanency cast on them. It was sweet.
