Know Protections

There is a 1st-level sorcerer/wizard spell in Magic of Faerun that is called "Know Protections." Is it a spell from the school of divination? What does it do, generally speaking? I was told this is a pretty good spell for a "blaster-type" sorcerer to have.

It does exactly what the spell description says it does.

"Know" spells are usually pretty specific, and you'd be best to go to your FLBS, pick up a copy, and look at the spell.

Magic of Faerun was one of the books that was done in the phase when "pretty good" was still what WotC did, instead of "pretty but worthless." I own a copy, and it's worth the purchase.

Right, I'll drive three hours and buy a book with money I do not have.

Yep. That, or just do the hard work of actually sitting down with your GM and working out what a 1st level "Know Protections" spell should do. I mean, it's not like it'll take even three hours, or that making widgets for a game system requires all that much work.

The third alternative -- someone copies the spell for you -- is illegal, and really can wind up with you thrown in jail.

Is it really that much harder to simply say, "it detects things like spell resistance and immunities?" You come off as being very condescending, just so you know.

Can't say I much agree with your assessment of the book, or of the old 3.0 (especially Forgotten Realms) versus the new 3.5.

Use the search inside feature, and you can see exactly what it is/does.

Huh. Until I would've thought all it did might've been to identify protection spells, like an improved detect magic. This is pretty strong.

Should have a backlash when there are overpowering protections- like looking at the Tarrasque.
