D&D 3E
Vampirism and "The Thirst"
13th-Aug-2006 02:01 am
To make a long story short, one of my PC's was recently turned into a vampire through a plotline, however due to divine intervention (plot-line, don't worry over it) he is not evil and I allowed him to keep his character. While this has a certain unbalancing effect on the party, that's not why I'm here.

Since the answer to the question "How long does it take before a vampire NEEDS to feed?" varies from source to source, I figured I would ask here to get a few opinions on the basic nature of vampirism, as it is by D&D rules.

Would a Vampire technically suffer from starvation after a certain amount of time, or would they simply be driven mad by the overwhelming bloodthirst? How long would it take for anything like this to occur?

Mind you that I'm fishing for opinions here, as there doesn't seem to be any definative answer. Of course, if there is and I'm just not seeing it anywhere, by all means let me know. Anything you may have to offer is appreciated. :]

Eventually it would be like an addict. When it gets hungry enough it will use anything to justify sating its hunger. After that, it would probably become an animalistic predator.

Libris Mortis has some great rules for dealing with undead PCs, including the dietary requirements of such creatures.

Vampires are described as having an insecapable craving for blood. They must feed every day or risk taking 1d6 Wisdom damage, although a DC 25 Will save negates this. If the vampire reaches 0 Wisdom, he becomes a ravenous creature willing to do anything in order to feed.

the old ravenloft Van Richten's guide to vampires describes how a good vampire trys to cope, and eventually slides into evil.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was hoping there was something in Libris Mortis, but since I don't have the book it's hard for me to check. :]

I was using a system with a DC 25 Will save, but I had it slightly different. I'll go with that, though, from now on.

Much abliged! :D

IIRC, they also have a pretty fierce hunger for life force, via their Energy Drain. Might wanna slap a guy around while they're drinking, to get the fill.
