Bog/Swamp Mofos
1st-Aug-2006 08:30 am
I need a few monsters for a bog/swamp scenario. Help!
1st-Aug-2006 02:32 pm (UTC)
Black dragons live in swamps.

You can probably open your DMG and look at the regional encounters and look under marsh/swamp.

hags, undeads, black dragons etc.
1st-Aug-2006 03:03 pm (UTC)
Lizardfolk/trolls are standard, and green hags.

If you have oriental adventures, check out some of the toads - they can be pretty nasty (make sure you know grapple rules!)

Heroes of Horror has a Bog Imp IIRC which has some interesting abilities for a special encounter

Awesome, thanks guys; I didn't have any of my books with me, and I knew you'd have some sweet answers.

Have them do a Listen check every 5 mins. or so, and keep saying "You are hearing Dueling Banjos" no matter what they roll.

ooooo, giant leeches. I like that.

Stormwrack has a Leech Swarm. That could be fun :)

That is rockin'. Thanks!
1st-Aug-2006 11:54 pm (UTC) - Re: Feeling Cruel?
Totally gonna be a boss in my game. Right after the half black dragon elephant.
2nd-Aug-2006 12:42 am (UTC) - Re: Feeling Cruel?
Thing is, half-dragons are special, and should be treated as such. Try to stay with a certain terrain-based paradigm. For instance, if you like the idea of a half-dragon pachyderm (sp?), then make it a half-white wolly mammoth. Or, as elephants have been known to travel through desert, a half-blue.
That is, if you just go for animals. monsters and races, that's a different ball of wax, but my favorite half-dragons are either magical beast or animal. As a player, I once faced a half-green t-rex. That was insane.

Well, it's a sea-based campaign, loosely containing a rather prolific black dragon of note who donated some progeny for guardian purposes. And can you just imagine the horns and tusks coming off that thing? elephants like the water too

Green slime.

If you have Savage Species you can add the Reptillian or Insectoid templates to just about any critter you like. Reptilian stirges ("Fog flitters") with Scent. Insectoid displacer beasts ("Swamp bugs") with Tremorsense.

And, do you know how hard it is to set a mummy on fire in a marsh?
1st-Aug-2006 06:31 pm (UTC)
Not hard if you have a lantern.
1st-Aug-2006 11:55 pm (UTC)
Do you know how hard it is to preserve a mummy in a marsh?
3rd-Aug-2006 12:22 am (UTC)
Well, that's a whole nother set of stats there.
2nd-Aug-2006 09:28 pm (UTC)
I created a monster called bog mummy from the bodies they have found in marshes and bogs that were so well-preserved.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the shambling mound!

Also, bullywugs, banshees, and will-o-wisps.
1st-Aug-2006 08:46 pm (UTC)
Mudmen, god damnit. You need mudmen.

Let's not forget MM2! If you're looking for a fun aberation, the catoblepas and the darktentacles sound cool. Any dire animal would be expected as well. The dire toad! Beware!
