snarl, smartass
A friend of mind told me about an interesting thing today. He said there was a rule (or guideline) of some sort that you could mesh two classes into one. Does anyone know of anything about this and/or could shed some light on the subject for me? He's starting up a game soon and I'm really interested in finding it out. I think it begins with a “d” if that helps any.

Also, does anyone have any good ideas for races that have a level adjustment of +2? One of his special rules is treating level adjustments as two less than they should, to kind of prod people to use more interesting races than the base races.

Guideline? You want guidelines for a campaign where LAs are going to be two-less than they are?

Well, ok.

1: Do not, under any circumstances, pretend that the game you play is anythign close to "balanced." There WILL be all kinds of problems if you trust the "level" number in a D&D or d20 product. You are also rather likely to have one PC that is vastly better than the others.

2: Embrace the game as something to be fun, and forget about "game balance" or any of the rest. Focus on things that are cool, interesting, and make you imagine all sorts of possibilities. (Werewolf ninjas! Two PCs at once!)

3: Don't invest too heavily in the game, if you run it or play in it. In all liklihood the "fun" will wear out sooner than normal, unless it's kept as just a passing recreation akin to a pick-up game of Halo or something.

Now, as to the original question: Yes, you're looking for Gestalt from Unearthed Arcana. It's worth picking up the hardbound or PDF versions if you care to tinker.

Oh, and "half dragon" is my favorite +2 LA race. (If your friend doesn't think that races aren't templates, well, just smack him.) Following that, especially if you want a humanoid that can roleplay, are the SR-heavy Drow.

The reason half-dragon is a template, not a race, is because you can be half-dragon half-anything-else. A half-dragon half-human is pretty different than a half-dragon half-drow.
