Spell compendium question

This is listed as a first level spell in the spell compendium (which i do not own) according to one of my players.

Light of Lunia (Spell Compendium): You radiate silvery light, which you can expend as 2 bolts that deal 1d6 damage each

2d6 seems unusually high for a first level spell...In fact I can't think of any non-scaling spell that does that much damage at first level. Someone help me out. If it is in the spell compendium, how is this in any way shape or form balanced?

My Planar Handbook says different.

Planar Handbook:
  • Light of Lunia: 2 rays, 1d6 damage each.
  • Light of Mercuria: 2 rays, 1d6 damage each or 2d6 each to undead or evil outsiders.
  • Light of Venya: 2 rays, 1d6 damage each or 3d6 each to undead or evil outsiders, or heal 3d6 to a living, non-evil target.
Spell Compendium:
  • Light of Lunia: 2 rays, 1d6 damage each or 2d6 each to undead or evil outsiders.
  • Light of Mercuria: 2 rays, 2d6 damage each or 4d6 each to undead or evil outsiders.
  • Light of Venya: 2 rays, 3d6 damage each or 6d6 each to undead or evil outsiders, or heal 1d6+caster level to a living, non-evil target.
Overall, it's a power boost, because the original versions of Mercuria and Venya sucked as 2nd and 3rd level spells, and Lunia wasn't all that hot. However, as has been mentioned, each ray requires a ranged touch attack to hit, and a higher-level darkness spell can counter any of these spells (or dispel them if you don't use the second ray immediately): "Darkness counters or dispels any light spell of equal or lower spell level."

One other note that significantly limits the spells: While the spells list their range as Medium, this is misleading. The spells are centered on the caster, and the rays have an explicit maximum range of 30 feet. I honestly haven't a clue why they listed a range of Medium.

You're, of course, right.

I meant that it did a flat 2d6 and 3d6 to undead (which was clearer in an earlier comment).

I'm suprised the range thing hasn't been errated. medium would make more sense if the PC were allowed to cast the Light upon anyone (an allY), and the recipient could spawn the bolts.
