Update: The kids and the Basic Set (v3.5 DnD)
6th-Aug-2005 06:50 pm
You know...all my posts are about the current DnD set...so just fyi.

They came over today and we played about 2:30-3:00. Now mind you the Basic Set is truly "basic" focusing on dungeon crawling,...but they were faced with decision making.

Where they left off they could have returned the stolen ring or continue on through the doors. It was nice to see and hear these two (hopefully) future RPers argue about 'what to do next'. :D

So they have been through 8 rooms so far, out of 13. They are now 2nd level.

So far what they know is this:
1. Always let the Rogue check for traps, locks, and etc.
2. Wait until the Rogue says it's ok to move on. (lol!!!)
3. There always could be a monster behind a door.
4. Stay away from anything that looks moldy.
5. Hammers work better than arrows against skeletons.

Next time they come over it will be time to level up and buy gear.

That's so cute, but it's so cute no one would stop and think "hey, they're on to something." Kids always pick up on the most basic things that they think are important. Good to hear they're still interested. :D

oh man, reminds me of my current D&D group. Cept they're 15... not 7. Funny how they're learning the same stuff, haha.

Man that rocks...i didnt start playing D and D till I was 10 or 11.. (im 31 now)and it was with a neighbor...the old 1st ed boxed set.

So cool that the young ones are still interested and eager to play. Lets just hope that their imagination isnt squashed by peer pressure as they get older.

Well their sugar intake was a little bit high today so there was much silliness...but that's ok.

Also, the truism, "Always carry a ranged weapon, just in case." Also, "At higher levels, remember that the bard usually knows best."

yeah I didn't notice that problem with the character sheets until in-game today...

My nephew (playing Eberk) looked over his sheet and saw he had a crossbow and 10 bolts. So he wanted to use it for some battles where his speed of 4 (or 20ft) was too slow to get into battle yet there was no stat for it on the sheet. So I had to let him know about it on the fly.

Hrm. Crossbows are a bit slow, heavy, and expensive... but hey, it's fantasy!

*laughs* It sounds like they have the basics of dungeon crawling down. Pretty soon they'll learn things about treasure like the pointies go to the fighter, the shinies go to the rogue (one way or another), and the scribblies go to the wizard/cleric" =P

I didn't think much of your first post on the matter, but after reading this second post I realized that what you're doing is actually pretty cool. I hope they're having fun. Keep us updated :)
