any ideas for a quick city based adventurer? i dm a game with 6 pcs and 2 won't make it tonight. i have enough to play but i don't want to run to pcs as npcs, so the two who aren't there are "hanging out in the tavern". the party tonight will be a rogue, a ranger, a cleric, and a psychic warrior, all 5th level.

Mistaken identity! A rough and tumble group of guys confronts them on the street, theatening them on behalf of their employer, a mysterious benefactor. A fight ensues which the pc's should win. On the leader is a clue which leads them to the benefactor, whom they can confront. Well run with combat here and there should take about 4-5 hours.

How large is the city? If we're talking like large urban center, you could use a rebel attack on some kind of night festival?

Or if it's a small town it could be a brief incursion of militarized orcs as they head on to a larger conflict. The orcs aren't expecting resistance from the locals so the party's interference intrigues their leaders, causing them to stay and investigate the adventurers presence.

If this isn't too late, here's some random ideas. You could have a circus or other traveling show could come to town. And there's more than meets the eye. Could be a cover for a pack of thieves, or other nasties. Or the circus folk could be selling some potions or snake oil. They could bring in some rumors of things happening in your campain. Some of the circus animals/freaks could escape and cause a ruckus. A child could go to the show and get lost, kidnaped, spirited away.
