Start them on a boat and make them work together to survive.

I ran a semi-'Romeo&Juliet scenario' involving the PCs doing guard duty for one of the families. They did their job to well and shot the daughter on her way back in from a midnight tryst.

Finding out that their employer was also a criminal boss by the frantic maid/best friend of the now unconscious daughter, they had to ham up the fact that she was discovered kidnapped and promised the lord to go out and look for her.

There were several tense moments of her almost being discovered, but eventually she was able to move about again and the party helped her to escape her father and re-unite with her forbidden love.

Just for a spicey twist, I had the party find the lover's body the next day with a the daughter's dagger sticking in his spleen. Supposedly, the family has hidden wealth and he secured enough to have them living comfortably for years...her idea was just to get out of the house and not have the extra weight of another man fawning over her and then trying to control as her father did.

The party eventually caught up to her and collected the reward for her safe return from the kidnappers *chuckle*.

Honestly, I'd start them out with a completely mundane standard: a tiny little town with a few interesting NPCs, and a nearby dungeon (maybe a goblin cave or a crypt).

The Ettin's Riddle is a free adventure on the WotC site that I've used before. It's got some good fighting, a little bit of a dungeon type area, and a puzzle that needs to be solved, one way or the other. It's for like 3rd or 4th level characters. You might want to try that, or any of the other free modules on the WotC site.

"The Sunless Citadel" is a nice module for lower levels, but you might want to either bump the PCs up to 2nd level if there are only 3 of them, or nerf some of the encounters.
