If there are any final fantasy fans out there, has anyone ever succeeded in creating a workable dragoon prestige class? i've been dealing with this problem for some time with no luck

here are a couple of versions that I've considered modifying. Obviously the debate is wether or not to have the Dragoon become a 5 or a 10 level prestige class. I lean more towards 10

Dragoon? Heavy cavalry?

That's what they're named after I would imagine. But then you never can tell with FF games. They have some of the most ridiculos names and concepts.

dragoon a la FF would equal heavy calvary without horseback with a variation of the 'Leap of the clouds' feat.

or effectivly a charachter with boots of striding/springing on a a ring of jumping on with full bonuses using a heavy spear :P :)

I have been trying to come up with my own Dragoon prestige class for years. A few times I've gotten it so that it was semi-workable, but I honestly have no idea what happened to all my work at this point. It could all be gone.

It's essentially just a leaping, pole-arm swinging knight that likes to kill things from above or 10 feet away.

:] They rock.

you have all given me much to contemplate. thanx a bunch.

If I were to speculate at a Dragoon without knowledge of FF and just go by whats here (okay..a little FF knowledge) I'd probably toss something like this out. I'm gonna rip a lil from various resources.

str & dex 13+
jump 10
balance 8
intimidate 6
tumble 8
Feats - Weapon focus-spear, dodge, combat reflexes

SKILLS
intimidate, jump, ballance, tumble, climb, craft-weapon making (focus on spear)and god only knows what else
Skill points per level 4+int

Level BAB F R W
1 +1 med/high/low Movement +10 Spring attack
2 +2 Leap of the clouds
3 +3 Spear attack +1d6
4 +4 jump +10
5 +5 Great Jump
6 +6 Spear attack +2d6
7 +7 Jump +20
8 +8 Dragoon Decent
9 +9 Spear attack +3d6
10 +10 Dragoon's Gift

Leap of the Clouds: At 2nd level a Dragoon's jumping distance (vertical or horizontal) is not limited according to her height

Spear attack: The Dragoon takes no damage on a successful tumble check when performing a Spear Jump attack. Opponent of the Dragoon takes damage the fall damage appropraite to the distance of the fall. Failing a tumble check results in the damage of the fall being split evently between the two combantants

Great Jump: Designate an opponent within melee range. Make a normal Jump check for a vertical jump; if the success indicates a jump of 40 feet or greater, you can make a normal charge attack as part of the same action, landing on your opponent from above for double damage. If a critical hit is rolled, the critical multiplier of the weapon is increased by one.

Dragoon Decent (modified slow fall a la monk): At 8th level, the dragoon is so attuned with his airborn attacks that he gains the ability to not take any damage from a fall from any height or a failed tumble check when jumping.

Dragoon's gift: upon 10th level, the dragoon reaches perfection of his art. Increase jump bonus by +30. Increase critical multiplier by a factor of 1 on normal spear attacks.

be careful about requiring a minimum ability score

well like i said...is just something tossed together. not quite as well thought out as some ideas out there.

It's okay; no offense meant, just the rules don't cater well to that

Thats KICK ASS! I hope you don't mind if I tweek and use it.

Honestly, it was an amature attempt at doing the class. There are some extra things I would add if i were to flush the PrC I made out a bit. Some of them are this

Dragoon's gift: upon 10th level, the dragoon reaches perfection of his art. Increase jump bonus by +30. Increase critical multiplier by a factor of 1 on ALL spear attacks. Treat ALL spears as keen weapons in the hands of a Dragoon.

Dragoon's Armor: The dragoon can return to his/her master upon taking a 'rite of passage' test (5th level. DM's discresion as to what it entails). The Dragoon Master will have forged/created an armor specifically designed for the Dragoon to excel in attacks. I'm thinking something along the line of light/medium or weightless armor with a metalic or flexible hard membrane that links from the torso to the wrists/arm of the charachter and acts something similar to a flying squirrel. I dont see dragoon's using full plate unless you REALLY want to overballance the class or you've got wierd battle tactics like having spiked full plate and using yourself as the spear to attack enemies.

ANYHOW. the armor leads to this new skill

skill:Airborn Combat (dex)
synergy bonus with +10tumble +10 concentrate gives Airborn Combat +2 for each (+4 total)

Airborn combat is the dragoon's ability to use his new armor to chaoticaly navigate the air currents and such that he/she is launching themselves through. With a good existing wind, the dragoon (with a successful concentrate/airborn combat check of increasing DC depending on the height) can make ANOTHER jump check and add this new check to his existing distance travled.

This tires the Dragoon and can only be used for 3 consecutive rounds before requiring a round of rest. Forgoing the round of rest, the Dragoon must make a Fort check each following round (increasing DC depending on the situation). For each round the Dragoon passes his/her Fortitude check, increase the eventual fatigue time by 1/2 a round.

EX: Laurent, dragoon 8th level, and his friend Nicolai, mage 10th level, are preparing to ambush troll berzerker(12th level berzerker). Nicolai uses his Fan of Wind to create enough air current for Laurent to ride. While Nicolai prepares to fireball the troll to hell and back, Laurent fights chaotically with the currents produced with the wind fan. Having made the required checks for 3 rounds, Laurent has climbed high above the landscape. Yet he wants to make sure the troll dies as fast as possible. Laurent, being the excelent Dragoon he is, tries to climb for another 4 rounds knowing he will be exhausted for 2 rounds afterwards.

As the troll charges into the opening near Nicolai, Laurent sees magefire being thrown at the Berzerker. Laurent prepares for a deadly attack from hundreds of feet up in the air to kill the troll in one blow..or at least give the troll a good reason to wonder what the hell hit him.

When Laurent impacts with the troll, the troll takes full fall damage + spear attack damage + str damage + normal spear damage from Laurent.

ripping through the trolls innards, Laurent collapses several yards away, incapacitated for 2 rounds afterwards. He can only hope that Nicolai can finish the job while he recovers.

============================================

now granted you could also come up with creative uses for this airborn combat ability. giving the dragoon ring of jumping and boots of striding and springing, the Dragoon would have one HELL of a jump range. This would make for a good messenger or even light travel.

Under these circumstances I would have to say that the dragoon can only sustain prolonged flight while under light encumberance. Medium encumberance limits his jumping distance by half. Heavy limits it by 1/4 and fatigues the dragoon twice as fast.

anyhow..thats just off the top of my head. enjoy

I've hit upon a lot of the same things when trying to design the class before, but I've never formulated it just right.

May I erect a shrine in your name?

holy shit! talk about 'ask and ye shall receive'... thanks a million for all your help

I would also note a final issue. Melee range for the dragoon using a spear is the normal 5'. HOWEVER, thrown range is 20'.

When re-reading the Great jump ability, one might consider spear thrown range as a part of melee range for the dragoon in order to make the class a bit more versatile.
