Hey guys, I'm kinda new here. I've never actually played DnD before but I've always thought it would be fun. However, I don't really know anyone else who agrees lol. Are there any free/cheap ways to play it online? With the 3.5 rules maybe? If anyone knows of anything, let me know...thanks!

Ok, where are you? (I'm in Albany, NY) You may want to go to enworld.org , and see if you can find some gamers nearby.

The single best way to start gaming is to find a group that you have at least one friend in, and try it out.

There are some ways to play it online, but it's like the difference between playing football and playing a PC football game.

Well the thing is I'd rather play online for now then have to meet a group of people to get together with to play. I don't yet have a license so getting together with people could be an issue. That's why online is just easier and more conveniant for now.

You can still go to http://enworld.org and find some play by post players and see if you can start that way, there are a few online real time games as well. OpenRPG is one and they may have some games as well. That may be the best place (ENWorld) to start, look at the different forum topics and go from there, and welcome into the fold
:-).

What is OpenRPG and how does that work exactly? Do you know?

It is a web based chat like system, it has dice rollers where everyone sees the rolls you can whisper to another player or the DM etc, I played on it during an online tournament for the RPGA and it worked out fine but that was 2 years ago or so...do a google search for it I do not remember whom makes it.

Good luck.

I just started using Open RPG and it's great for online games. I had been using IRC and it's head & shoulders better than that.

i'm starting a play by post game soon, check on monkeygames. i have enough players already but you can watch and see if its something you'd like. i can tell you though that as a long time gamer face to face table top games are way more fun. in my opinion anyway. you can always look for a gaming store. they'll usually have a bulletin board or a game going on.

I'm playing by post, semi-freeform, over at www.desertrealm.com. But then that wouldn't get you 3.5 rules experience.

A couple of people I've played with started with roleplaying computer games, so I agree that's a good way to go in the beginning.

How about Neverwinter Nights. I don't play it, but it is at least 3rd ed. if not 3.5. Is it still popular, boys and girls?

How's Icewind Dale?

Or Everquest? Eeek, on second thought, Evercrack might be a bad idea. We face-to-face people might never get you back.

Hmmm.
