Intelligent / purposeful evil (i.e. it has an alignment) or just a corrupting force (makes the user evil)?

IMO it'd be really hard to rationalize detect evil *not* applying to places and things.

The 3e "Player's Handbook" says it is an at will spell-like ability (Sp) that duplicates the function of the Detect Evil spell. At the very least this means the player has to declare they are using it. It is not an innate (Su) effect. This could mean it takes 1 action to activate the ability and the paladin must concentrate to maintain it (as spell description).

In the text for Detect Evil it explicitly mentioned "evil magic item or spell" and the rating is caster level / 2, it also has formulas for (in order of "evil power") creatures, undead, elementals, and outsiders.

You already probably have the answer to your question

does the paladin's detect evil ability allow him to detect evil items or just evil aligned creatures? i can't remember. would a paladin recognize an evil weapon as an evil weapon?

But I think I'll answer it anyway in case you didn't. The answer is yes, but only if the item/s in question are intelligent. It only works on things that do evil of their own accord, so non intelligent items wouldn't have say over what is done to or by them, does that make any sense.

i think in this case, a non-intelligent item that is cursed to turn its weilder evil, or an unholy item, would scan as evil on the old paladin radar though. yeah?

Technically, yes, but you wouldn't actually be reading the evil of the weapon, it would be reading the evil around or on the weapon. The weapon itself is just a piece of worked metal.

So basically...yes.
