What's a good way for an archer to get around 3.5 piercing damage reduction using his bow? Any trick to turn an arrow into one of the other two damage types?

Magic Arrows? You might still lose the arrow's damage, but wouldn't you get the extra damage for fire or other magical element?

ummm.... that was the point of a bow, was the fact that it could pierce a mounted knight clad in platemail a few hundred paces away. (more actually)

Yeah, but it doesn't do bupkiss to skeletal undead.

I don't think British Engineers had undead in mind when they designed it.

Just draw a warhammer and deal as best u can.

Agreed but I would have said heavy mace.

We're just starting out an epic campaign, level 25. I assure you, this is WELL beyond the realm of realism here.

Alchemist fire arrows. Or blunt arrowheads. They do less damage...but they are effective vs undead. I thinks arms and equipment covers this stuff.

Technically, I suppose, you could take your DM into letting you used "modified" arrows that are partially weighted with a wide blunt tip at the end, but I'd give you all sorts of range and to-hit penalities based on the goofiness of the arrows.

not necessarily....hollow point arrows made from ceramic filled with holy water perhaps? or arrows enchanted with Disrupt Undead?

There's an arrow type that has a specific name (can't remember) that are all undead bane. Very expensive, very rare.

exploding arrows maybe? I'm sure i can come up with how to make them....

That is why you have a CLERIC in the party. That is why you carry a club as a backup weapon. Arrows on skeletons just doesn't make sense.

WhaHappund?????

I can definetly see his desire to circumvent the piercing rules. I like to play keepaway, too. But the character I play keepaway with would rather close with undead because he's a Hunter of the Dead and I've got a an undead bane sword so coupled with a handy feat called Supernatural Blow.

Actually, this is a level 25 campaign, and I want to have all my DR bases covered, since the character I'm playing is a bow specialist. Didn't know if there were any obscure magic spells, or feats, or such.

Throwing Hammers? Rocks? Sling? Unless your bow starts doing oodles of damage, it's just not going to be effective against a skeleton.
20th-Feb-2004 03:31 pm (UTC) - Hammer arrow!

(hopes it works!)

Right, I was just going to say, is "fire" one of the other damage types? :)
