quick spell question
26th-Apr-2010 09:08 pm
So I'm playing a sorcerer in an upcoming game, and one of my bigger spells is going to be Wings of Flurry from Races of the Dragon. As mean as the spell is (uncapped force damage? Dazed if you fail the reflex save? Nice!), it's in need of some cleaning up. Does anyone know if there was errata on the spell? Barring that, what's everyone's opinions? The main thing I'm stuck on is the area of the spell, and valid targets...

I can post the description if requested.

Wow, I hadn't really paid attention to the spells in Races of the Dragon before, but that one at least is incredibly badly worded (not to mention a tad unbalanced in my opinion).

I think the intention is that you place a 30'-radius burst so that it's touching the caster. (Note: this is incredibly dumb, and should have been a 60' cone if that was what the writer wanted.) Think something like how Close Blast attacks work in 4th Ed. - this is basically a Close Blast 12.

You could also argue that the spell is a burst centered on the caster, extending 30' in all directions, but then that wouldn't have needed the elaborate and confusing description.

In either case, I would argue that the spell affects everyone (enemies and allies) within the blast radius.

I was leaning towards the burst centered on the caster, but a cone is a very nice idea. A 60 ft cone seems a bit big for a 4th level spell though, especially with the other properties of the spell.

Okay, the evil part of me objects to reducing the power of this spell, but it needs to be done if I want to be allowed to play casters. I'm thinking of changing it to either a 30 ft cone or 30 ft burst (centered on the caster), and capping it at 10d6. Part of the appeal was the uncapped damage, but it shouldn't be better in all ways than cone of cold or ice storm, both higher level spells. Votes?

If your going to make it 30 ft radius and 10d6 cap, is it really worth the higher level slot over fireball?
(I don't have the book, so I can't judge.)

Well, it's force damage, and opponents are dazed for 1 round if they fail the reflex save. I'm not sure whether the cap should be 10 or 15, though.

I'd say 10. 15 would make it strictly better (weird area excepted) than Cone of Cold, as you're doing a status effect AND force damage for a level lower.

Yeah, that sounds fair. I'll let the DM decide on the shape of the spell. Thanks, all.
