Thats the way I usually do it.

waiot strike that... I usually determine the XP of 2 CR 2 creatures. The Xp is done individualy.

There is a formula, somewhere, I think. It is only really relevant when the PCs run into a large number of lower-levelled chreatures, who are too far below their own level to be worth any XP.

I believe its something like 4 CR X = CR (X+1).

it matters this time because they're 3rd level characters going up against a bunch of kappa and kuo-toa, both CR2. need to add em up. one at a time they're no big deal, but i'm gonna mob em at the end.

Are you trying to determine the Encounter Level (EL) of a group of CR creatures. If they all have the same CR then doubling the number of creatures adds two to the CR. So, in your example, 2 CR2 creatures do make an EL4 encounter. 4 CR2 make EL6, 8 CR2 make EL8, etc. It sort of breaks down after about 25 creatures increasing the EL by 10.

Hope this helps,

The DM guide has a huge chart that works out what EL different CR's make - just look up EL in the index you can't miss it
