Where are the Alternate Class Features?
12th-Aug-2007 03:26 pm
doom!
I have some spare time and a little masochistic streak going on, and I wanted to track down and list all the "alternative class feetures" I can find. I found some in:
  • Players Handbook II
  • Dungeoncraft
  • Stormwrack
  • Complete Mage
  • Complete Champion

What other sourcebooks should I look through?

There's a whole lot :I

There's a bunch in the Unearthed Arcana, and I don't think this counts, but there's Racial Substitution levels in all of the Races of the Whatever books that change the rules some? (Elf Paladin gets Ranged Smite and Unicorn, for example?)

I did a number of urban alternate class features for the Cityscape web supplement, here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a

Planar Handbook also has a number of them.

There's a mild distinction between alternate class features, substitution levels, and varients. Substitution levels first appeared in Planar Handbook and later in the various Races books and they replace an entire class level. They got updated to Alt. Class Features in PHB2 which bothers only with trading one class ability for another. The books you listed are the only ones I know of that list actual Alt. Class Abilities.

Alternate Class Levels often have a lot more than a single change.

For instance, the Warforged Alternate Class Levels for fighter not only swap some abilities around, but are d12 HP rather than d20.

Indeed, it's a whole different level, rather than the simple class ability.
