D&D 3E
Bit of a random question
2nd-Jan-2007 10:21 pm
If you're reading this right now, how old are you? What would you say the average age of your playgroup is?

I got really excited today when I saw that my local library sponsors a D&D playgroup, but came down later when I found out it was only for 13-18 year-olds. D&D didn't really strike me as something necessarily for teens. I'm 25, my playgroup is about the same, and I can vaguely remember meeting a couple gamers that were 35-40 years old.

Of course, this is the same library that's putting some heavily adult-themed manga in their Young Adult section, so I suppose they could just be a bit blurry on their age boundaries.

29, group 24-32
3rd-Jan-2007 04:02 am (UTC)
30 is the average
3rd-Jan-2007 04:06 am (UTC)
I'm 46; the average is 39.
3rd-Jan-2007 04:25 am (UTC)
I'm just a hair under 33. The group ranges from mid-20s to mid-30s.

Chief, that's when I got *started* with D&D -- actually I started playing when I was 10. Mind you, I'm 33 now, but still... :)

Like I said, not *necessarily* for teens. I started with THACo back in high school as well. It was just weird to me to see that they limit the group to ages 13-18 when it'd be a good time for people of a wide age range to contribute to something.

Maybe it's easier for the teens to show up without the room full of moldy oldies, and not so many people are pushing to keep the adults off the streets.

24, others are 27

You also have to factor in the setting. Kids are allowed to go to libraries. "Mom, I want to go to the library." "Over my dead body!" ;) Adults are allowed to go over "strangers" houses or use other venues. "Dad, I met some crusty 50 year old dude on the Internet. He wants me to come over to his house and play 'Swords and Sorcery'..."

I'm in my early 30's. My group averages around 30, but we started the group with work-mates, so not too surprising.

I'll be 34 in March, and the average age of my group is 28.
3rd-Jan-2007 06:16 am (UTC)
currently i am twenty-three, i started playing at six (my father wanted another player).

therefore, i've played with an age group of late twenty to late thirty somes, and then in college with people my age.

I'm 39. We're in our 30s or early 40s.
3rd-Jan-2007 09:17 am (UTC)
they're putting WHAT in their YA section????

Where was this library when I was in high school???

oh...as for your question...um I'm in my early 30's, and as for my group, since I don't really know more than a couple peoples' ages, I'll say that I at least know that I'm not the oldest in the group

They have some sort of youth initiative going, they're adding a lot of "newer" media to their YA section and creating corresponding clubs.

My wife and I went yesterday and walked out with the first three discs of Trigun, Nuku Nuku Dash, some PS2 game that turned out to be crappy, every New X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, and House of M graphic novel thus far, and a bunch of other assorted trade paperbacks. They have the most extensive anime collection I've ever seen, including some of the more avid collectors I know.

I just realized this could theoretically mean they stock RPG sourcebooks now. I might be going back today.

I'm 29(30 in a couple of weeks); the rest of the people I play with would be from 25 to 45.

The library my partner works at does roleplaying, wargaming and LAN gaming for the local kids too, 11-19 (but the 19yr old was "special educational needs"). Although they have apparently let the parents join the LAN sessions on occasion if there have been PCs spare.
The best bit is that they carry some of the books though and we can all get them out:>
The comics always seem to cause problems, my partner, who has actually read some, had to point out that some weren't entirely appropriate for the junior section:>

I'm 21; my uni tabletop groups ranged from 17-25, my online rpol.net groups tend to run anywhere from 18-40, mostly with people falling in their 30's. I know several people, myself included who were introduced to d&d when they were 12 or younger, so I don't see it necessarily as something for adults... although I also don't think that hentai is appropriate material for the YA library section.
3rd-Jan-2007 10:29 am (UTC)
Average is 26 and a half.
3rd-Jan-2007 10:31 am (UTC)
Ages range from 21 to 30.
3rd-Jan-2007 11:45 am (UTC)
29, which is probably about the median in both my two gaming groups.
3rd-Jan-2007 11:47 am (UTC)
I'm 34, but the average is 36.

3rd-Jan-2007 12:27 pm (UTC)
I'm 20, average age of my group maybe 22ish?
3rd-Jan-2007 01:10 pm (UTC)
I'm 29 and the average is about 32. I think the oldest guy is 36.

I am the youngest at 26, the average age is 29.

Like the vampiric rodent, I'm also 32. I'm in two groups. The first group, in which I play, has one older than me in his mid-30s and the other 3 are in their mid 20s. The second group, in which I DM, has the same one older than me and the DM from the first group also plays and then the other two are in their mid to late 20s.

I'm not sure on exact ages, particularly because two had their birthdays within the past two weeks.

I'm 44. About 12 years ago, I taught 7th Grade English students a unit about using RPG's as a tool for studying literature. Afterwards, several of them decided to form a role-playing club after school on Fridays.

Some of the best role-playing I've ever seen came from that group.

Right now, I have four players in their mid-to-late 20's, and a player who's 46.

I'm 23; my third ed group ranges from 21-40, with an average of 29, and my second-ed group ranges from 23-32 with an average of 27.
4th-Jan-2007 09:43 am (UTC)
I'm 20, in a group that ranges from 15 to 30 or so.
4th-Jan-2007 04:46 pm (UTC)
I'm 22 (almost 23), and everyone I play with currently is either my age or a year younger.

Oh, in my online game I play with a bunch of people who must be around 25-30 I think.
5th-Jan-2007 01:51 am (UTC)
23, average age probably 25. But I know kids who play. And a lot of the older folks at my job do, too...I think it's a pretty universal thing.

42, with our group ranging from 30-ish to mid-40s. Started playing when I was 15, though.
