Creative Summoning
12th-Sep-2006 01:33 pm
I've been given liscence to create varients of the normal Monster Summoning lists to tailor them a little more since the character I am playing is a summoner. Since there is little else he can do beside summon, I was hoping I could get some ideas of creatures from you that would be a boon to add to my Monster Summoning I-III list. Feel free to think outside of the box. In particular, I am looking for creatures that will be of assistance to my party as supplemental warriors, healers, or magical support (i.e spell like abilities).

Other creatures that you think of that would be useful (and why) would be wonderful. The only restriction I am needing to follow at this point are creatures in the Summon Monster I to III range.

A lot of the Monster Manual-type books have a list organized by CR at the end. Seems to me it'd be easier to make a list of the monsters with the appropriate CR, then examine their entries.

I was hoping I might get some ideas for some monsters that I might not have thought of. There are several supplements out there MMI-III, Fiend Folio, Monsters of Faerun, ect. so I was hoping some might pop into mind from a few of the readers here.

I have started looking through the CRs of the books I have currently and I am compiling a list if potentials.

MMIV has entries under certain monsters as to which Summon Monster level would be appropriate for them

Throw in a celestial/fiendish kobold with a level in whatever class you're feeling. It'd be amusing, useful, and fit in the level range.

How's that for outside the box?

You could always summon other character types from an ''alternate dimension''. Third level elf cleric of Whomever for Summon Monster III if you want to go that route. They could show up with minimal necessary gear - nothing magic - until higher level spells, etc.

Firstly, summoning is not your only strength... I assume you have Spell focus- Conjuration and Augment summoning... If you don't, you shouldn't be a summoner... But look at all the other spells that come under conjuration, not the least being Teleport and Dimension Door... As for things to summon, I have a player that almost exclusively summons Earth Elementals... They are unparalelled in soaking up damage AND they can swim through that pesky locked door/wall/ceiling... Not to mention hanging out of the ceiling to nail your enemies... And if they are augmented by the feat, it's even better...

Thanks, guys. All great ideas. I had forgotten about templates and wasn't sure if I could 'summon' npcs with class levels.

Got the augementations (or will get)that you mentioned. Good stuff!
