Level Adjustments
24th-May-2006 12:17 pm
Someone help me out here please. The Bugbear races in the MM 3.5 shows a level adjustemt of +1. I remember seeing a correction somewhere for it being like +3 or +4. Does anyone know where? Trying to clarify something before a new game starts.

I think I saw it in the races of fearun book

Bugbears are LA +1, but 3HD, so their ECL is 4.

Don't forget it's 3 monstrous HD, which bring it's ECL to 4 before any actual class levels. It possible that's what you're thinking of?

I'm the player causing my very patient DM this headache. I think this is the story with the Bugbear's level adjustment and ECL, but I wanted to see if I was correct:

The Bugbear's ECL comes from the base hit die (3) plus it's first character level. The ECL is used to calculate how much XP is needed to reach the next level. So, if I was a Bugbear Rogue1/Fighter1 to start, the character would only be 3rd level. However, I'd have to gain an inordinate amount of XP to get to the next level - the amount needed for a 5th to 6th level progression or 5000 (since the character's starting ECL is 5). The rest of the party would only need 3000 to level.

I think that trade off is why the level adjustment is so low for the bugbear. The racial HD work against it over time as compared to the other classes.

Does that sound right?

Almost. Your character has an ECL of 6, not 5.

3 from the racial hit dice
1 from the LA
2 from the classes

LA goes on top of the racial hit dice, they don't overlap.

So to level up, you need the xp difference from 6 to 7, not 5 to 6, or 6000 xp.

A bugbear with no class levels is supposed to be equal (roughly) to a 4th level normal character. 3 levels for the racial hit dice, and an extra +1 for its nice stat mods and racial abilities.

So a a Bugbear Ftr1/Rog1 is really a 6th level character, and should be advanced as such. If you've talked teh GM into letting you have this with a party of 3rd level characters, you shoul dbe able to outshine any of them in HtH easially.

So, if I was a Bugbear Rogue1/Fighter1 to start, the character would only be 3rd level.

The character would be fifth level( humanoid 3/Rogue 1/Fighter 1), effective character level 6 and would take 6000 XP to level up. For a balanced party Everyone else should be playing (effectively-) sixth level characters too.

But note that if everyone else is playing sixth level humans, next time you all level up you will get a feat and they won't, as you will be reaching your sixth character level and they will be reaching their seventh.
