I have a question about the Warlock class (from Complete Arcane):

The Warlock can take feats like Ability Focus and Empower Spell-like Ability to bump up his invocations, including the eldirtch blast. But does a Warlock need to take a feat a different time for each incarnation of the blast? Like could he take Empower (blast) and have it effect sickening blasts (blasts after applying the Sickening Blast invocation)? Or would he need to take Empower (blast) and Empower (sickening blast)?

Both Ability Focus and Empower Spell-Like Ability require you to choose a single spell-like ability.

As I understand it, the Warlock gains multiple spell-like abilities--they don't have a single spell-like ability that they can use multiple times. Check the class description of the Warlock -- if the Eldritch Blast is a seperate spell-like ability, you only need the feats once.

HOWEVER, if you find text to the effect that each blast/invokation combo is a seperate spell-like ability, you need to take the feats seperaetly.

FWIW, were I to design a warlock-like class I'd make the blast a single spell-like ability, and the "invokations" feats that apply to that.

It was my understanding that the Invocations that affect the blast (such as Sickening Blast) were applied to the Eldritch Blast, not a separate Blast in and of themselves.

Under this logic, Empower Eldritch Blast would Empower the blast of a Sickening Blast, but not the Sickening effects from the Invocation.

Looking at the class description and the invocation description, it looks like that would be fine.

Eldritch Blast is a spell-like ability; therefore the feat "Empower Spell-Like Ability" affects it just fine.

The invocation "Sickening Blast" also affects one's Eldritch Blast, but does not change its nature.

Think of it like casting...grr, I can't think of any good examples of spells that do similar things; True Strike and Assay Resistance are my best tries, but they're still imperfect.

Think of it as having both the "Empower Spell" and "Energy Substitution" feats. You don't have to take a separate "Empower Fire Spell" feat. This isn't the best example, either, but it's all I can think of at the moment.

Using an invocation *and* a meta-blast feat should "stack" just fine. (Even though it's not exactly stacking.)

And with regards to what i_am_the_owl says--there are no variable, numeric components to the "sickening" part of the Blast, so he's exactly right: the Empower feat affects the blast's damage, but not the Sickening effect it has.

Hope that all made sense!
