Back in the habit

I've just started my new d&d game - boy am I confused! I keep on saying "do you want to dodge" like in warhammer, and saying that a 1 is a botch! I'm going to have to get used to it again. I think it's been a couple of years since I last ran d&d.

automagical failure!

It's in one of the core rule books, I think the PHB...

PHB & GMHB

And there's also the house rule of fumbles. =)

Not on skill rolls though.

It's entirely optional to extend the botch/fumble rules to skills also, and it makes for interesting situations: and more realistic ones at higher levels. Everyone has a chance of screwing up.

But is that more realistic? It's like at epic levels you can walk on a hair (DC60) but still have a 5% chance of falling off a 12" wide platform (DC10)?

If you asked me (which you are, check that out): yes, it is more realistic.

I don't care how good you are at something, there's always a chance that you're going to make a stupid mistake.

I think if you roll a 1 and succeed anyway, you should make a DC 15 WIS roll for be dazed for 1 round from the surprise.
3rd-Nov-2005 11:42 pm (UTC) - Re: a 1IS a botch!
And/or a DC 15 CHA roll to not Snrk in joy.

Automatic failure isn't the same as a botch; if you look at systems with actual botch tables they are far worse, things like: you throw your weapon away; you stab yourself; the bow snaps; you shoot your comrade; you accidentally bend his broken arm the wrong way severing arteries.
Then you've got Fading Suns where there are both botches and automatic failures-so a 10% chance of fucking up(which always seems rather high).
3rd-Nov-2005 03:29 pm (UTC) - Re: a 1IS a botch!
So like critical fumbles. We play with those sometime.
3rd-Nov-2005 03:38 pm (UTC) - Re: a 1IS a botch!
Ecactly like that:> Different systems have different names for them, as with many things.
Generally I'm not sure if they're a good thing or not, they can be far too regular sometimes which seems a bit odd; a 1 in X chance of you launching the missiles rather than turning the sub etc would definately leave the world a different place quite quickly. On the other hand you do get some good RP stuff that can come from them, and sometimes they're just plain funny/amusing too.

I don't really see automatic failure as a botch, beheading your mate is a botch, failing is merely an inconvenience.

Hee I'll be in your shoes in about a month trying to get back in the habit in an Eberron campaign :)

Simply reread the combat section of the Player's handbook. It sums things up very nicely. The new 3.5 phb even has handy little charts for attacks of opportunity etc.
