Is there any type of magical tattooing or scarification that might allow a raging barbarian some benefit in combat. I tried to come up with somehting, but the best I could think of was spell-stitching and that's for undead. I'm looking for a totured wild barbarian, who might've been altered for beat-stick purposes by his captors.

red mages have tattoos that they can imbue with magic for certain effects based on caster level. i believe it's in the forgotten realms source book. they also make thayan knights and gladiators that are somewhat under control and enhanced by red mages.

not sure if you're looking within the realms, but it might help build a model.

One way to homebrew it with minimal effort is to look into the permanency spell. Certain spells could be made permanent. A game effect could be- the tattoo is the spell+permanency.

Ooh, good suggestion!

I'd homebrew it as a divine (or druidic?) version of the same spell that gives benefits along the same lines (bonuses to AC or attack or what have you- but cancelled by armor- so you could have a naked tattooed barbarian in the equivalent of say.. permanent mage armor.

Also- have a look at the psionic tattoos- these are one-shot spell-like effects that disappear when used. So a barbarian could have a "summon nature's ally iV" tattoo inscribed on him (a tattoo of Dire Boar, say) and when he touches the tattoo- the boar jumps off and joins the battle. The tattoo goes away (so it's kinda like a scroll or potion one-shot effect.)

Some great tattoo ideas would be things like enlarge, heroism, flame blade...

There is a Rune Scarred Beserker PrC in The Unapproachable East supplement book for Forgotten Realms that might be worth a gander at.

Maybe Tatooed Monk out of Complete Warrior. Probably not the flavor you want, but mechanic-wise coul help.

Yeah, a Tattooed Monk who was then somehow converted to non-Lawful; he'd retain all his monk abilities but wouldn't be able to progress as a monk any more.

If you dig into Planescape, there's a NPC, Fell, who does magical tattoos.

They work like magical items that don't take up the usual slot, instad taking a 'tattoo' slot. I think.

...I'd have to go look it up. :D
