Warlocks.

Who's played, or seen, a warlock (base class from the Complete Arcane)?

How much does the "powers come from nameless extraplanar evil" aspect come into play? How much of a hindrance is it?

I ask because I'm thinking of designing a warlock with a decidedly different power source (the weave itself, in FR terms) and I'm wondering if that changes the balance of the class.

Not at all. That's purely a flavor issue, like the "sorcerers are believed to come from the bloodline of dragons" bit in the PHB.

I like the idea of playing a warlock whose powers come from a fey heritage, for instance, though I haven't yet done so.

You might need to tweek one or two things (DR/cold iron comes to mind), and avoid a couple of the incantations, but overall I think it would work. Most of the iffy incantations can be saved if your GM is willing to get a bit creative on the special effects part.

Also, for what its worth, I love the warlock as a class. Rangedtouch attacks are just nasty. The time or two I've used them as class levels for a monster, the PC's have gone way out of their way to kill them first. Always the sign of something nasty.

Great fun to play but if your not crafty your gonna die quick. Just blasting people gets boring (Why I never play a fighter) so you have toi have one hell of a personality to have fun with this class.
