Unearthed Arcana Poll

Monkey
Do any of you use any of the variant rules in Unearthed Arcana? I'm curious as to how that works out for you.
I am currently using class variants (my setting has no arcane magic, so I am making use of the Divine Bard, and bolstering spellcaster options with the Cloisterd Cleric and Paladin of Freedom.
I also use Traits and Flaws.
Next, I am cnsidering getting a hex-based battle mat and using those rules, as they make diagnal movement easier to calculate. I am also considering implimenting Incantations, but not until the average party level gets into the double digits. (currently, the APL is 4).
Who else out there is mucking around with this stuff?

We have an Elven Paragon in the party. He's pretty good.

We've used weapon groups, with mixed opinion. Didn't really feel like it added a lot of flavor for the extra work, but may use the idea of allowing weapon focus to be with a whole group instead.

We've used lots of the varient classes and found them fun. I've played a cloistered cleric before for example.

We tried traits/flaws before and ended up dumping them. The flaws were too easy to min/max. Spell casters taking flaws to hurt their melee combat totals for example while gaining a boost in spell casting power. I've less issue with traits, but as DnD characters tend to get hyper specialized in skills I can see that they'd have the same issue.

I'm a big fan of hex based movement instead of squares, but my group's spuare.

I like the concept of spell component meta mgaic, but we haven't tried it in game.

I'm considering trying to introduce the wound/vitality system, but stealing more from the SW rpg than UA. I also really like the idea of armor as DR, but they didn't go far enough (in that armor still gives a bonus to AC instead of only DR).

In other words, I may use some of the ideas but certainly not as written.

I love to use the vp/wp system. it makes it more real.

I use the cloistered cleric and the specialist mage options. None of the other class stuff is very worthwhile, most of it is just for players who don't understand multiclassing.

I'll most likely incorperate something to restrict summoning lists too, I just need to do something to compensate for the power loss.

Hex based combat is tempting but I like my walls straight.

I'm always a fan of variant classes. Cloistered cleric is quite nice. Non-LG paladins are nice. Paragons are neat. I'm not sure I 100% agree with the UA implementation, but that's ok. I *really* don't like the Bloodlines implementation. It doesn't seem "worth it" to me. I like flaws and traits, but only when used by an intelligent player, or more accurately a non-min/maxer. They can add quite a bit of flavor to the game if you let it. The campaign I'm currently in has a mostly-pacifist cleric. She plays the character well, so it comes off as a lot of fun.

Oh yeah, I've also used weapon groups and like those. Again, if you play it well (not just follow the rules), it can be fun without being "I'm good at everything".

Oh yes. The bloodline mechanics are a really horrid mess. It's a shame there wasn't a bit more quality control to the book in general.

I love Unearthed Arcana to death. There is so much that I want to use/have used from it.

As far as Diagnol movement, just count every other square as 2 squares of movement. Our group does that

The diagonal movement calculation seems simple, but, true story, during a session a player needed to calculate some large amount of diagonal movement, asked another player, then that player asked another, and pretty soon my whole group was doing the pythagorean theorem to figure it out. No joke.

Prestige Paladins. Racial paragon classes. Lot's of other awesome stuff I don't remember offhand.

Quite a good book.

I use the class AC bonus in my pirate game. At low levels this is beatly and nobody can hit anybody else, but as you near middle levels it evens out.
