I'm planning a one off campaign for my RP group. To give the DM a bit of a break and to give myself a go at DMing.

I'm thinking of having an underwater adventure, helping aquatic elves against various underwater nasties.

Any pitfalls I should be aware of? Suggestions for encounters?

Put the vampire template on a giant octopus like Spriksie suggested a few weeks ago. =)

beware of 3d movement. In water, its much more of a problem than in most games.

Agreed... you have the same challenges as running an aerial game... how do you keep track of people in an truly three dimensional environment.

Also, breathing is very difficult underwater. Be aware of that.. most breathing spells are short term.

To be honest I was going to 'cheat' and give out magic items. Water breathing and swimming trinkets.

But the 3d aspect does pose a problem. No casters hiding behind their fighters...

Take a look at the seafolk from Races of Destiny. I might also suggest for a location an octopus's garden in the shade.

Well, besides the 3d movement that also popped in my head as the others suggested, you might have to take into effect lighting underwater. While the aquatic elf cities may be lit up, depending on how deep (far away) those cities are, things could get pretty dark away from any civilization or the surface of the water (when it's not day). Someone needs to sport some sort of lightsource. I would think that being underwater is somewhat like being in a cave in that sense. Some say this might be going too far, some say not, but I have also heard of some games require the party members to figure out how to keep themselves warm in the water too. Just some random I've picked up from others seeing as I haven't played a sea/underwater adventure myself.

By the way, don't suppose anyone is going to put some thought into their swimming skills, eh? ^-^ Oh and yeah I agree, that a vampiric octapus/squid thing would be a nice little surprise for the party. *chuckles*

oH, I almost forgot spell affects.. lots of spells like fireball lightning bolt etc. are changed.

Stormwrack comes out in August, if you can wait that long :p

Three-dimensional combat and limited character options are going to be your biggest challenges, I would imagine.
