character idea

I wanted to bounce a class combination off you guys and see if you have any advice about how to develop the character's stats (I've already come up with plenty of story and such). The class combo is monk/druid, the race is either elf, half-elf, or human. What do you think? I like the idea but I am not sure how practical it is. Thanks!

I think it is a viable and interesting combo. I think half-elf or human would be the best race. I never liked the combination of an elf and monk at all.

It would be extremely fun to play however. Natural spells enhancing your natural combat. Be careful though, if you take a level in druid, you can no longer gain levels as a monk (unless you and the dm work out something on the dl heh)

Well, usually I'm the DM in our group but one of my players wants to start a game. I'm not the kind of DM to make exceptions like that (I used to, but it caused problems), but apparently he is (he actually suggested letting me do that, not the other way around).

Human or Half-elf would be best because one of those classes can be a favored class, and once you hit monk after taking some druid you won't be able to come back. And that's multiclass peanlty city, just waiting to happen.

A recent issue of Dragon Magazine had the "Wild Monk" Variant class. It combines Monk related abilities with some wild shape. Alignment restricted to Lawful Neutral. It looked pretty cool

actually, one of my friends wanted to do something of the same sort. one of the things we are doing to build this class is basing it along the lines of the naruto manga. in case you dont read it, its pretty much a ninja comic. they make a good balance of physical and also mental abilities. when they play the class, pull a 3.5 ranger. make them decide if they want to have more physical or mental abilities. that way they cant become a power class that everyone wants to play as. for race i would say restrict to half-elf and human. the elves dont change enough to be able to handle this class well (in my mind).

just make sure when you get this class finished to post it on here :-D

Oh, I'm not making a new class, I'm cross-classing, sorry for the mistake. Yeah, I've read/seen a lot of Naruto, it is great.

I will eventually be making a prestige class for monk/druids for my own campaign setting, which is where I originally got the idea for this character. I want to try out the class combination.
13th-Jan-2005 06:18 am (UTC) - Look at unearthed Arcana
Look into Unearthed Arcana by WotC. They have varients for both druid and monk that allow the monk abilities for the druid etc... I belive they take away wild shape or spells or something

I actualled played a LN M Human druid/monk for a while in a short campaign. The DM and other players thought I was crazy, but it made sense. Using WIS for AC helped cover for the poor armor choices, unarmed attacks helped deliver touch spells and cover for the poor weapon selection, etc...

Damn it, now I want to play one again...

Yeah, I made the character yesterday. She has an AC of 16 as a 1st level monk without any armor or anything. When she takes druid, she'll get spells (among other things) so she can, say, stun someone with stunning fist, do normal damage, and use produce flame all in the same attack (if she really wants that sucker dead!)

Pretty cool character, I would say.

Assuming you work around the restrictions that both classes have, it should flow somewhat smoothly and you should be able to come out on top.

If you get the multi-class restriction lifted, it'll be all smooth sailing. Otherwise, you'll have to plan it carefully. x.x It's something that I do all the time, but I have no books in front of me and I haven't memorized the growth of either class (because...it's been at least 2 weeks since I've played. :P), so I can't say for sure.

In either case, have fun with the character. If you don't, the terrorists win.
