Fiend Folio

Genesis
Well, I just picked up the Fiend Folio. Does anyone else have it? What does everyone think? Personally, I'm having trouble thinking of ideas for most of the contents. For me the monsters are more atypical than usual, and really almost seem forced if put into most campaigns.

I flipped through it once. I really seems more like a companion to the MoP, but it's got some good things in there from the 2e MM, like Necrophidius, Mongrelmen, Carytid Columns.

Necromancer Games' "Tome of Horrors" is a better book. Its basically also a lot of reprints of old 1st edition stuff from the original Fiend Folio, monster Manual, Monster Manual 2, etc. Theres also some original stuff. They had special permission from WotC to publish the stuff, and WotC was supposed to not be printing any of what they gave permission for in future products, or at least at the time they, "had no plans to publish any of those things."

Well, Fiend Folio came out and duplicated about 20 monsters. However, Tome of Horrors has over 400 beasties in it, ranging from the weird and atyipical of the Fiend Folio to normal everyday animal additions.

The fiend Folio has some interesting stuff, the grafts and symbionts are actually kinda cool, if you have a campaign where they'll fit.

i have it and have read it twice.
a lot ov the monsters aren't that easy to fit into most campaigns, but they are rather interesting...
it does focus a lot on outsiders, but there are some things in there fit for 'regular' adventures, and quite a few that would fall into the 'bizarre villian' category.
basically, i find it to be a rather well done addition to my library and i do recommend it.

Yeah, man...a lot of the monsters there are almost borderline ridiculous, lol. If I was doing a campaign about exploring the different planes and whatnot, I'd have no real problem...but if it was gonna be the typical "I'm walking through the dungeo--OH SHIT! GNOLLS!!!" (Well, you know what I mean), then I'd have a hard time fitting in some of these monsters...

I personally don't have the book, and even if I did I wouldn't look through it right away since one of our DM's is intending to use a lot of it, but from what I remember seeing when I skimmed through it in the store, it DOES have a lot of odd stuff.

Some of them are pretty brutal if you're not prepared.

We fought 3 eggish strength-drainy swarm things and they almost demolished our third level party. Granted, for area effect spells we had two burning hands and that was about it, but geez. CR 1? At least, that's what our DM told us after the session :o

I'm soon to be running a Midnight campaign, and I have found the Fiend Folio to be very very nice and full of things for me to use.

You see, in the Midnight setting, the only erm... 'extraplanar' creatures that are able to be summoned or encountered are treated as individuals because if you are a channeller and can summon them... You are summoning them from somewhere else on your base plane. Aryth [Midnight's world] is cut off from ALL other planes. Thus, I've found the diversity of daemon-types to choose from very refreshing.

Well, I see we have some conflicted points of view through-out the post. I do believe I've found some use for some of the monsters, most of them need editing to suit my particular tastes.

And reading back, some of the monsters aren't particular inventive, like the Caryatid Columns. I reread that and thought to myself, "People have been doing that for ages, just not calling them that, or with those particular stats." ::shrugs:: Oh well. As a side note, anyone else think those spell requirements for some golems seem rather abstract? ::mulls it over::

I suppose all in all, I'd give it a 3/5. It's fairly solid, but nothing groundbreaking, to me.

As for Necromancer's Tome of Horrors, I've never seen or heard of it. The same goes for Midnight. Either of you two want to elaborate or point me somewhere to check it out?

Oh, does Lilithraevyn know that Lilith is not a good person? Just curious. (Is a rather big mythology buff)
