Female Dwarf Beards?
26th-Oct-2004 08:51 pm
leonal
Tolkien suggested at it. Forgotten Realms says yes. Dragonlance says kinda. PHB makes no mention of them. Discworld says yes, and to comic ends. But where do you stand? Do dwarven females have beards? And what are your reasons for supporting either?

I tend towards having it about as a rumour, generally because no one tends to see female dwaves-they tend to stay back in the halls and caverns; as do 90%+ of all dwarves. I'm not sure why I went for that, but it seems to work. I know one system(can't remember which) where there's no such thing as female dwarves; dwarves mate with...I think it was nymphs, famale childrem being nymphs and male being dwarves, I quite like that too.

I'm all about it. That's just dwarves.. you never hear anything about dwarven females NOT being completely hairy, so what is there left to believe?

I'm not sure, but I'll ask our female dwarf PC :p

I think it is a matter of Personal wants. I would play a Bearded female, but then again I'm male in RL. FR says they have Beards but the few Females that have shown up in Salvatore's works have no mention of Beards. The stories of Dragonlance (Dwarven Nations Trilogy comes to mind) also never mentions beards on the Women. In video games, Everquest allows you to choose a Bearded female dwarf toon, but World of Warcraft does not.

I say go for it, but remember that their beards should not be as long as the males. Matter of pride there.

actually, it was one of his latest books that there were mention of female dwarves with beards... a brief reference

In DragonLance if you read Dragons of Summer Flame, during the description of the Irda, they make mention of female dwarfs having "whiskers." And the males find them most alluring.

I suppose it could differ, depending on the clan. I mean, some dwarves could, and some couldn't.

...I'd say yes, just to freak out people. :P

yeah i like that idea...that it depends on the clan.

in general, i think female dwarves have beards though prolly not as thick or hairy as the male dwarves. in campaigns i've played they always had them anyway.

Gimli was making a joke. Female Dwarves do not have beards. Moustaches, yes, mono-brow half the time. Beards? Not till their over a hundred. Then it's scraggly at best.

that's just in LOTR though.

female humans in real life can have a scraggly beard. i think it makes sense that female dwarves could. i think it's something that should vary depending on clan or sub-race. AND i think that if a DM doesn't want to have it, they don't. or if a player wants to play one without one, she doesn't. but in general, i think they do or at least can.

You are absolutly right.
26th-Oct-2004 11:41 pm (UTC) - PHB says no.
There are drawings of male and female characters of all races. Female dwarves are shown as beardless.

But, so are the male humans . . .
27th-Oct-2004 02:19 am (UTC) - Re: PHB says no.
Are you suggesting that female dwarves shave or otherwise depilate?

Ok, not to sound close minded or anything, but as a DM and as someone writing up his own campaign setting, I have to say it: something about dwarven women having beards just... irks me. I suppose it's that it makes them more comical in a way, almost less believeable, in that it's just so against my natural instinct that they would. How I handle it is kind of like what a few have mentioned, wherein dwarven ladies--like human women--CAN grow facial hair if hormonally inclined, but for the most part are beardless, though hairy like a lot of eastern European women are stereotyped to be. There's just something about having a female dwarf with a beard that distracts from dwarves as a race, you know?

Hairier than normal, but not bearded is my vote. Even fantasy needs to have some basis in reality, if only to maintain the suspension of disbelief.

I would have to say yes some do. 1) Tolken did sugjest it. 2) I see some women today with stubble.

In the game I played, female dwarves didn't have beards.

I personally think that it's a possibility, just as it's a possibility for female humans to have beards. But because of hormones it's rare.

However, the idea of female dwarves having beards does provide a balance with the male elves who can't have beards.

There's a gryphon master in World of Warcraft that has a beard. And is female.

I say yes. Dwarf women have beards. Just like many human women develop in their later years, lol. ~_^

I use to talk about this all the time with my friends in my beggining days of DnD. the DM Swore left and right that fermales can't have beards. Alas, I was dumb and learned quite quickly not to prove a DM worng all the time. I pointed out in one of the old Dwarf books in 2.0 that the Dwarven females had beards! I got kicked out for a few sessions
